Does CBD Work for Pets? What the Science Says

🌿 MirthPlus Wellness· Pet Health· 6 min read

Pets have an endocannabinoid system — mammals all do. That's the starting point for understanding why CBD can be effective for dogs and cats, and why it works through the same fundamental mechanisms it does in humans. The research base is smaller, but what exists is consistent: CBD addresses real physiological problems in animals at the same receptors it targets in people.

The most common reasons pet owners turn to CBD are anxiety (separation, thunderstorms, travel), joint pain and arthritis, seizures, and general inflammation. All four are mechanistically supported — though the approach matters significantly.

How the Endocannabinoid System Works in Pets

Dogs and cats have CB1 receptors in the brain and nervous system and CB2 receptors in immune tissue — the same distribution as humans. CBD interacts with these receptors to modulate pain signaling, inflammation, and anxiety response. One key difference: dogs appear to have more CB1 receptors than humans, which may make them more sensitive to cannabinoids. This is why dosing must be approached conservatively and THC must be completely avoided.

CBD is not the same as THC — and this matters especially for pets. THC is toxic to dogs and cats in doses that humans tolerate easily. Any CBD product for pets must be THC-free and specifically formulated for animal use.

What CBD Can Support in Pets

Anxiety & Stress
Separation anxiety, noise phobia, and travel stress are the most common uses — and the most consistently reported successes. CBD modulates the stress response through ECS receptors in the amygdala and limbic system, the same regions involved in fear and anxiety in humans.
Joint Pain & Mobility
Arthritis and joint inflammation are extremely common in older dogs. A Cornell University study found significant improvement in pain scores and mobility in dogs with osteoarthritis given CBD — one of the more robust pieces of pet-specific research available.
Inflammation
CBD's anti-inflammatory action through CB2 receptors in immune tissue applies to pets as it does to humans. This has implications for post-surgical recovery, skin conditions, and chronic inflammatory conditions.
Dosing Pets
Start with 0.1–0.2mg per kg of body weight twice daily. A 25kg dog might start at 2.5–5mg per dose. Use pet-specific formulas and increase slowly over 2 weeks if needed. Always consult your vet, especially for pets on medications.
